Classes

Depending on your level of knowledge, we will work together to determine an appropriate program for you. Below are flexible course outlines. Depending on the number of participants we have scheduled, the outline may be flexible due to individual interests, retention of information, and goals of the course.

BEGINNER week one:

  • Pronunciation, alphabet, basic vocabulary
  • Everyday phrases, time, weather, numbers, money
  • Traveler's Spanish - vocabulary, shopping, restaurants, banking
  • Subject pronouns, definite and indefinite articles, gender of nouns, demonstrative pronouns
  • Present tenses of -ar, -er, -ir verbs. Emphasis on the verbs tener, estar, ser.
  • Vocabulary: greetings, countries, numbers, menus, colors
  • Culture: General Mexico
  • Geography: Mexico states

BEGINNER week two:

  • Interrogative pronouns, adverbs, adjectives
  • Indirect object verbs
  • Ir a + infinitive
  • Present continuous, simple future, and preterite verb tenses
  • Vocabulary: clothing, body, activities, places in a town, directions, families
  • Culture: Mexican highlands, coast, Mexican Americans
  • Geography: Capital cities, countries where Spanish is the primary language

INTERMEDIATE (two week minimum):

  • Present and past perfect. Indefinite preterit vs. imperfect
  • Conditionals
  • Comparatives & superlatives
  • Subjunctive
  • Phrasal verbs
  • Emphasis on listening and comprehension
  • Reading and writing - keyboard slang
  • Vocabulary: relationships, problems, common slang, phone calls
  • Culture: Purépecha, Nahuatl, Mexican music
  • Current events: Introduction to Mexico politics
  • Geography: Spanish speaking countries, capital cities

Courses include 3 classroom hours 5 days a week, and 2 hour language exchange sessions 3 days a week.
Students will be expected to complete approximately 1-2 hours of self-study 5 days a week.

Beginner class is 10:30am - 1:30pm, Monday through Friday. Language exchange is scheduled for the morning or afternoon.

Intermediate class is from 3:30pm - 6:30pm, Monday through Friday. Language exchanged is scheduled for the morning or afternoon.

Movies are shown 2-3 times per week to aid with comprehension.
